Los Angeles County High School for the Arts Collection
Scope and Contents
The materials in this collection was created from 1983-1991. The bulk of the
collection includes News Releases, Clippings, and Publications most of which
were maintained with the original title given by Cathy Ross (LACHSA) upon
donation. The News Releases, Clippings, and Publications contain information
related to LACHSA’s ongoing developments through its inception. Smaller series
include LACHSA information documents, announcements and flyers,
correspondence, miscellaneous, and ephemera.
Series I: News Releases
Inclusive Dates: 1984 - 1986
Arrangement: Chronological
This series consists of News Releases from LACHSA to the press for them to
publish in Newspapers, magazines, etc.
Series II: Clippings
Inclusive Dates: 1983-1988
Arrangement: Chronological
This series consists of clippings from news sources with articles written about the
establishment of the school, and other spotlight articles about LACHSA and the
students.
Series III: LACHSA Information Documents
Inclusive Dates: 1985
Arrangement: Chronological
This series consists of general information that was given to the first students
and parents attending LACHSA. This includes audition information, student lists,
schedules, etc.
Series IV: Publications
Inclusive Dates: 1985-1986
Arrangement: Chronological
The bulk of this series consists of newsletters from LACHSA, California State
University, Los Angeles, and CAG. Also includes, brochures, a magazine, and
newspapers, which contains information about the school. The newspapers
include the Los Angeles Times, Los Angeles Tribune/News, and CSU Stateline.
Series V: Announcements and Flyers
Inclusive Dates: 1985-1988
Arrangement: Chronological
This small series consists of announcements for fundraising events held for
LACHSA, and flyers for other special events. Included in this series are guest
lists of events and pamphlets.
Series VI: Correspondence
Inclusive Dates: 1985-1986
Arrangement: Chronological
This small series consists of letters from LACHSA to students, parents, and
volunteers. The letters to students include copies of acceptance and denial
letters.
Series VII: Miscellaneous
Inclusive Dates: 1985

This small series consists of information for the CSU archivists on how to operate
with the donated materials of the collection.
Series VIII: Ephemera
Inclusive Dates: 1988

This very small series consists of a list of the Class of 1988, two Jazz records
containing LACHSA student musicians, and a poster.

Biographical / Historical
Los Angeles County High School of the Arts, also known as LACHSA is a Visual
and Performing Arts high school established in 1985 by Caroline Leonetti
Ahmanson. Ahmanson was an American fashion consultant, businesswoman
and philanthropist.
LACHSA is a model small learning community fully integrated within the campus
of California State University, Los Angeles, offering direct connection to higher
education. The school serves 600 culturally and socioeconomically diverse teens
from more than 80 school districts in the county.
LACHSA offers a specialized program combining college preparatory academic
instruction and conservatory-style training in the visual and performing arts such
as music, theatre and dance. It is one of few public arts high schools and funded
in part by the non-profit Los Angeles County High School for the Arts Foundation.
